Pre-Covid Ipoh adventures (Part 1)

During our first year of degree, Habil, Nathasyeena, Syifa, Diana, Nuren, and I went on a food trip to Ipoh to shoot for our TITAS assignment. Even though Nathasyeena and Nuren were not our group members, they helped us a lot in capturing the scenes, suggesting interesting ideas, and navigate the places around Ipoh.

Since our TITAS assignment was focused on Chinese-Malaysian food particularly noodle dishes, we headed to Restoran New Hollywood - a Malaysian food court with predominantly Chinese vendors and a few Malay and Indian vendors.

Honestly, we ordered quite a lot on our first restaurant trip that but it's okay since we were sharing every dishes.

Lockdown has been tighter and longer than ever. Sadly, for two – or more – months Malaysians and the rest of the world could not dine out.

Thus, this article may suggest a few ideas on what to order at New Hollywood; so everyone can have a taste of it when lockdown phase ends.

Situated just about two hours from Kuala Lumpur, New Hollywood is probably the best breakfast place anyone could have ever gone to.

Some might think that going to Ipoh is too far to have a bowl of breakfast. But this will change once the first timers take their first bite.

Though New Hollywood opens all day but a crowd can be seen during breakfast hours.

Our table was packed with every noodle dishes that could be offered from the restaurant.

We also ordered dim sum sets that includes a huge variety of siu mai and plump prawn har gow.

The noodle dishes that we ordered were Pan Mee Soup, Dry Pan Mee, Oyster Mee Sua, Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fan, and Laksa Siam.

Pan Mee Soup

Freshly made Pan Mee Soup will warm the body in colder mornings. Thick noodles in fish broth will surely cure Monday blues – leaving nothing but a happy tummy.

Dry Pan Mee

Chili oil enthusiasts will love Dry Pan Mee. Soaked in peppery and nutty chili-infused oil, the noodle dish is a local favourite characterized by its QQ (chewy) texture.

Oyster Mee Sua

Besides that, spicy Oyster Mee Sua will satiate the taste buds upon the first bite. A healthy dollop of sambal bilis is added to further elevate the dish.

Their Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun is famous among foodies across the peninsula.

ree

The Chee Cheong Fun is made using either shrimp or chicken wrapped in rice crepe and drenched with sesame oil and soy concoction with sambal on the side.

Laksa Siam

ree

For more spice and kick in the throat, Laksa Siam is the way to go. They are uniquely tangy, slightly herbaceous, and fragrant.

Other dishes that are worth trying include a selection of fritters, rojak, and youtiao.

For the price range of RM5 to RM6.50 per bowl, everyone will go home with a smile on their face; hunger quenched, for less.
